MENTOR APPROACH LETTER- Here's my original you can MODEL for yours
By Danny Welsh, CMO of HIS, Greatest Real Estate Giveaway DirectorMENTOR APPROACH LETTER- Here's my original you can MODEL for yours
Almost a decade ago now I came up with a "Mentor Approach Letter" to use to contact people to whom I believed I could offer value of some kind and learn a lot from in exchange. Yes, people that means I have definitely worked for FREE for people on MANY occasions!
I dug up the original to share with
all of you to use and create your own, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF
YOU NOT CHOSEN TO WORK WITH US IN THE MMMCHALLENGE.
In a sense, those who
were chosen had applications that showed in their answers this
kind of white-hot initiative and desire.
I have used the following letter I wrote or a derivative thereof ever since to secure employment with, internships with, catch the attention of, get mentored by, or lay the foundation for partnerships with those I admire from some of the world's leading real estate investors, internet marketers, business leaders, public speakers, bestselling authors, talented copywriters and more.
Below, UNEDITED for your use to model. Make it your own...and LET ME KNOW THE RESPONSES YOU GET from people you want to MENTOR YOU.

Dear _______,
Do you ever feel like you have more wealth building projects and ideas than you have the _time_ to bring to concrete reality? What about this: do you ever feel like you have more wealth building projects and ideas than you have the _resources_ to bring to concrete reality?
If I'm reading you correctly, likely you answered "yes" to the first.
After all, you're looking to leverage yourself. Duplicate yourself.
I answer "yes" to the second.
I suggest we both work together and accomplish both our goals, __________.
Right now, at this point in my life and entrepreneurial journey... I am game for whatever you offer, and believe I could be a great fit for helping take your enterprise to the next level.
What makes me believe I'm the right person you're looking for?
I once heard that in the Orient, South and Central America, and in Spain and Portugal, a number of separate geographic regions with disparate cultures-- each shares a singularly distinct custom. In each place, young bulls are tested for the fight arena in the same way. Many different cultures, same custom.
Each young bull is led into the ring and encouraged to pursue and attack the picador or matador. Just as they seem certain of running him down, the man leaps clear and stabs the bull with his lance in a quick, shallow cut. The bravery, and thus fitness to compete, of each bull is then carefully judged by the number of times the untested creature is willing to continue to charge despite the painful and repeated sting of the blade.
__________, sometimes I feel like that young bull!
I cannot in text describe to you how I feel about this incredible journey to become a successful entrepreneur. We would have to find a time to talk.
To me, now, though, I can't imagine a life in any other capacity than as an entrepreneur.
The all-day, all-night brainstorming sessions full of the intoxication of possibility. The high energy of working around other success-minded people. The exhilarating thrill of the chase. The delicious anticipation of courting a big deal. The excitement of working to take fragile ideas and turn them into rock-solid realities. The wonder of learning to model and improve results. The pride in creating something- an idea, an experience, a transaction, a barter, a venture, a product, a service- that people will love to pay to own or have or keep or use or experience or share.
No, there's no life for me but that of an entrepreneur.
I wouldn't even trade the agonizing frustration when things don't go as planned. The gut-in-your-feet feeling when nothing you do is working. The times when unstoppable momentum seemed as far out of reach as starting is for many people. The fear that the success you're seeking will always be in the realm of "they" and never in the realm of "I". The constant battle of feeling you have to validate yourself to people who have no business giving advice in business-- or anything for that matter-- because you're not yet at the pinnacle. The days and lights working long and heard to further a vision that if only you could present it in the right way to the right people, might change the world for the better-- and make you a healthy living at the same time.
But you're an entrepreneur. You know what I mean.
It's not easy, achieving success. I don't believe it is and you may or may not, __________, agree with me on this. But I do believe it IS simple.
Learnable.
Teachable.
You know I'm correct, do you not?
That's why I'm contacting you and asking that you consider working with me.
Bottom line: I know that if I continue to charge forward, if I persist in pursuit of the life that I want, I will succeed. No question about it. No doubt in my mind. Whenever I'm faced with a challenge I run...directly at it. And I've got my battle scars to prove it.
Without my mistakes, without my stumbling, without the times I've been knocked down and almost trampled on by life-- I would not be as strong or as focused as I am today. And I would not have started shedding that fear of risk and feeling of undeservedness that hold so many people back-- if I hadn't "failed" in business already.
More than once. ;)
Today I'm ready to go to that next level. I'm ready to not just get in the ring and start swinging, but develop a strategy to knock out my goals-- with or without a trainer.
But, I'm wondering...could you know now what I mean and look forward to that challenge with me?
You are there, aren't you?
Oh man, I hope I didn't go overboard here but I am excited!
You may have tuned out there while I was talking about me. That's OK. I understand. It's human nature.
Let's bring you back and tune in to everyone's favorite station: WIIFM.

In short, I think you're a person who can feel a tremendous sense of satisfaction in pouring into a person like that-- if you feel confident that that person in whom you've now recognized talent will take action.
Replying to this, I'm not sure if you'll call me or email me or ask for a resume or what...but either way, I'm ready for you.
Get this...I attended a seminar once when the speaker asked people: "How much are you worth?"
"A million dollars?"
Hands shot up.
"More?"
More hands.
"Now, who would put it on a resume, that they expect that?"
No hands.
If I could do it over, I'd raise my hand.
Oh well, better a completed action than an imperfect non-action, right?
Give me the chance and see what I put on my resume. ;)
I look forward to discussing with you what in my experience and CV lead me to believe I can be successful working with you.
I wonder if you can, when you get a moment, contact me and immediately I think we can find out whether you believe I'm right.
Respectfully,

OK, school's out. Use something like this letter (again, make it your own, I don't want copies of this floating around the Internet!) and you will be AMAZED at the results you can get, relationships you can form, and flat-out astounded at the caliber of people who will be inspired to reach out and contact you back.
