Lessons from Rick Melero's "Reality Check" Video

First Lesson - Bad habits and terrible circumstances in our lives are due more to internal factors than the externals such as genetics and the environment. At the root of this problem is our mental attitude (aptitude follows attitude). Even then, it is our deepest thoughts - at a subconscious level, that sets the wheels turning in our lives. A thought hitches a ride on an emotion. That emotion if strong enough will lead us to an action. That action takes us through one of two doors: for better or for worse.

Second Lesson - A life is like a big train. It is not easily set in motion. Once in motion, it is not easily stopped. A single thought is not enough to wreck a life nor bless it with success and riches. A great ship or submarine rises or falls by adding or removing lots of "ballast." A barrel of water won't do. It is the continual or constant repetition of the process that produces the results that are eventually "set in concrete" as actions shape the character.

Third Lesson - The process of renewing the mind needs a spark to get the process going. Most of us are quite aware of our shortcomings but lack a basis for wanting change. For some, life is what it is and no change is necessary. Yet others are content to blame their heritage, their environment and every other thing except themselves. Still other's, accepting responsibility for their actions and their predicament, set upon a course to effect change by their own efforts, only to be disillusioned when they come upon challenges that they cannot conquer.
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Personally, I believe that this spiritual perspective is the only way to get true and lasting change. We must work with the assistance and resources that God has provided while constantly aligning our lives with His will.

Putting all together - We start, we move and end with the Spirit. The spirit of God convicts us to change. We begin to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. We slowly and consistently retrain our minds to align with the will of God. We bring our bodies/physical attributes under the subjection of our will. We seek mentors and other professionals to help us with our challenges and to make the path clear before us. We surround ourselves with caring supporters to reassure us when we stumble and celebrate us when we succeed.
